Torticollis & Plagiocephaly Correction

Understanding Torticollis

Torticollis, or “twisted neck,” occurs when neck muscles tighten, causing the head to tilt to one side. This can limit movement and affect a child’s ability to interact with their surroundings. The most common type, congenital muscular torticollis, often results from positioning in the womb or birth trauma.

Symptoms & Causes

Signs of torticollis typically appear between 2 to 8 weeks of age and may include:

  • A persistent head tilt
  • Difficulty turning the head in one direction
  • A small, firm lump in the neck muscle

If left untreated, torticollis can contribute to plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) and developmental delays. Seeking timely care can prevent complications and improve your child’s comfort and mobility.

At Wagner Health Center, we provide specialized assessments and tailored treatment plans to address torticollis and support your child’s healthy growth. Let our experienced team guide you toward the best solutions for your little one.

Understanding Plagiocephaly

Plagiocephaly, commonly known as flat head syndrome, occurs when an infant develops a flattened area on one side of the head. This can result from positioning in the womb or prolonged time spent lying in one position. If left unaddressed, it may affect head shape and development. At Wagner Health Center, we provide the guidance and care needed to support your child’s healthy growth.

What is Plagiocephaly?

Plagiocephaly is a condition characterized by an asymmetrical skull shape, often caused by external pressure on an infant’s soft, developing skull. It can sometimes be linked to torticollis, a condition that restricts neck movement, leading to a preference for one side.

Symptoms & Causes

Signs of plagiocephaly include:

  • A noticeable flat spot on one side of the head
  • Uneven facial features
  • Limited neck movement, especially if torticollis is present

Common causes include prolonged time spent in one position while sleeping or resting, muscle tightness, or a natural preference for turning the head in one direction.

Effective Treatment & Support

Plagiocephaly is a common condition, and early intervention can lead to significant improvements. At Wagner Health Center, we offer tailored treatment plans, including repositioning techniques, physical therapy, and other corrective approaches to help your child achieve a more balanced head shape and optimal development.
Your child’s well-being is our priority, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

The Importance of Early Diagnosis

Early detection of conditions like torticollis and plagiocephaly plays a crucial role in your child’s development. Identifying these issues early allows for timely intervention, reducing the risk of long-term effects. At Wagner Health Center, we prioritize early recognition and effective treatment to support your child’s healthy growth.

Recognizing the Signs

Being aware of developmental cues is essential. Signs of torticollis include a persistent head tilt or difficulty turning the neck, while plagiocephaly often presents as an uneven head shape. If your baby consistently favors one side when looking around or feeding, a professional evaluation may be beneficial. Early intervention ensures personalized treatment plans tailored to your child’s needs, promoting optimal mobility and development.

Benefits of Early Intervention

Early intervention for torticollis and plagiocephaly can significantly improve your child’s development and well-being. Addressing these conditions promptly leads to a smoother recovery, reduces the need for extensive therapies, and supports proper milestone achievement.

Signs of improvement can appear within weeks of starting treatment, enhancing neck mobility and correcting head shape. Beyond physical benefits, early intervention helps your child gain confidence as they explore their surroundings with ease. At Wagner Health Center, our dedicated team provides personalized care to ensure your child receives the best start on their path to recovery.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

Effective non-surgical treatments for torticollis and plagiocephaly focus on improving neck mobility and head shape symmetry without invasive procedures. These approaches provide significant results, making them a preferred choice for many families.

Physical Therapy

A personalized physical therapy program can help correct torticollis and plagiocephaly through gentle stretching and strengthening exercises. Guided by skilled therapists, these exercises improve neck posture, enhance mobility, and support proper head positioning for long-term benefits.

Orthotic Devices

For some infants with plagiocephaly, custom-fitted cranial helmets can gently guide skull growth, correcting asymmetry over time. Comfortable and designed for daily wear, these devices have shown positive results within months of consistent use.

At Wagner Health Center, we provide tailored, non-invasive solutions to support your child’s healthy development and ensure the best possible care.

What Our Patients Say

Hear from our happy patients! See how chiropractic care at Wagner Health Center has improved their health and well-being.

I injured my back over 20 years ago in the military and then my neck in a motorcycle accident so have been to many chiropractors over the years. Dr. Wagner is top notch. I’ve found that allot of chiropractors just do the same basic set of adjustments every time regardless of what’s wrong with you. Dr. Wagner actually listens, evaluates and only adjusts what and where is needed. I was surprised to see someone comment that they felt he jerked their neck? With my past neck injury Dr. Wagner has adjusted my neck many times and I’ve never felt any rough treatment. He has even adjusted one of my daughters. With a specialty of working with children you obviously know how to be gentle.
I have highly recommended Dr. Wagner to several people and will continue to do so!

Ahhhh…. I’m in love with a married man!! I went for my first ever visit yesterday evening. We did the whole consultation/evaluation thing and an adjustment. I have never been to a chiropractor before… i just woke up last week with unbearable neck/back pain and couldn’t move like i should have been able to. So i searched around and found Dr. Wagner on here and thought I’d give it a shot. I think I’m hooked.

Yelp

Was having really bad lower back pain called to hopefully get in with him the same day. Was surprised when I called and Dr. Wagner picked up. I first asked if he accepted my insurance and then described my problem area. He instructed me to come in when he opened later that day to see him. I got there and was greeted by Dr. Wagner. After I finished my paperwork I went into his consult room where we went over my problem area and he described to me what he does and how chiropractors can eliminate pain. I was adjusted and it felt amazing. I’m going for a follow up appointment in a couple days. dr. Wagner was patient and funny. Will definitely be back 🙂
