Understanding Sciatica
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve—extending from the lower back through the hips and down each leg—becomes irritated or compressed. This often results in pain, tingling, or numbness, typically affecting one side of the body. Identifying the underlying cause is essential to developing an effective sciatica treatment plan.
What Causes Sciatica?
Sciatica is not a condition itself but a symptom of various spinal issues, such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or muscle inflammation. These factors can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, leading to discomfort that can range from mild to severe. Understanding these causes allows for more targeted and effective treatment.
At Wagner Health Center, we focus on diagnosing the root cause of your sciatica pain and providing personalized care to alleviate pain and improve long-term mobility.
Common Causes & Symptoms of Sciatica
Sciatica can develop from various spinal conditions and lifestyle factors. At Wagner Health Center, we focus on identifying the root causes of your discomfort to provide effective sciatica pain relief.
Common Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica is often caused by conditions that put pressure on the sciatic nerve, including:
- Herniated Discs – When a spinal disc presses on the nerve, causing pain and inflammation.
- Degenerative Disc Disease – Age-related wear and tear that affects spinal stability.
- Spinal Stenosis – A narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses nerves.
- Injuries & Postural Issues – Accidents, poor posture, prolonged sitting, and obesity can contribute to sciatic nerve irritation.
Our sciatica chiropractor understands the best treatment strategies to reduce discomfort and improve spinal health.

Symptoms of Sciatica
Recognizing sciatica symptoms early can help you seek timely treatment. Common signs include:
- Radiating Pain – Sharp or burning pain that starts in the lower back and extends down one leg.
- Tingling & Numbness – Sensations in the buttocks, legs, or feet.
- Muscle Weakness – Difficulty standing, walking, or maintaining balance.
When to Seek Help
If your pain lasts more than a few days, worsens, or is accompanied by severe symptoms such as loss of bladder control or extreme leg weakness, it’s crucial to seek professional care. Early intervention can lead to faster recovery and prevent complications.
At Wagner Health Center, we are here to help you find relief and regain mobility with personalized treatment plans tailored to your needs.
Sciatica Treatment Options
At Wagner Health Center, we offer a range of effective treatments to help relieve sciatic pain and restore mobility. Our personalized sciatica approach ensures you receive the best care tailored to your specific needs, empowering you to take control of your recovery.
Conservative Treatments
For many, non-invasive treatments provide significant relief from sciatica. These options focus on reducing inflammation, alleviating pain, and improving mobility:
- Physical Therapy – Strengthening exercises and targeted stretches to improve spinal support and reduce nerve compression.
- Chiropractic Care – Gentle spinal adjustments to enhance alignment and relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.
- Medication – Anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants may be recommended to manage discomfort during early treatment stages.
Advanced Treatment Options
When conservative methods aren’t enough, advanced therapies can provide additional relief:
- Epidural Steroid Injections – Reduces inflammation around the sciatic nerve for long-lasting pain relief.
- Radiofrequency Ablation – Uses heat to target and reduce nerve pain.
- Innovative Therapies – Cutting-edge treatments tailored to your specific condition.

Lifestyle Changes & Prevention
Managing sciatica isn’t just about treating symptoms—it’s about making lasting lifestyle changes to prevent future flare-ups. At Wagner Health Center, we emphasize proactive care through simple yet effective habits that support spinal health.
Maintaining a healthy weight reduces pressure on the spine, while proper posture—whether sitting, standing, or sleeping—can alleviate strain on the sciatic nerve. Ergonomic adjustments at work, choosing supportive footwear, and incorporating movement into your daily routine can all contribute to long-term relief.
Tips for Managing Sciatica Symptoms
Sciatica discomfort can be disruptive, but small adjustments can make a big difference. Consider these strategies to ease pain and improve mobility:
- Maintain good posture while sitting and standing.
- Use heat or cold therapy for immediate relief.
- Consult your healthcare provider before taking over-the-counter pain relievers.
- Incorporate gentle stretching exercises to reduce tension.
Exercises for Back Strength & Sciatica Prevention
Strengthening the core and back muscles is key to preventing future sciatica episodes. Targeted exercises, such as pelvic tilts, bridges, and hamstring stretches, improve spinal stability and flexibility. Just a few minutes of daily movement can help relieve nerve pressure and enhance overall well-being.
At Wagner Health Center, we provide guidance on personalized exercise routines and lifestyle adjustments, ensuring you stay active, pain-free, and in control of your spinal health.

What Our Patients Say
Hear from our happy patients! See how chiropractic care at Wagner Health Center has improved their health and well-being.
I injured my back over 20 years ago in the military and then my neck in a motorcycle accident so have been to many chiropractors over the years. Dr. Wagner is top notch. I’ve found that allot of chiropractors just do the same basic set of adjustments every time regardless of what’s wrong with you. Dr. Wagner actually listens, evaluates and only adjusts what and where is needed. I was surprised to see someone comment that they felt he jerked their neck? With my past neck injury Dr. Wagner has adjusted my neck many times and I’ve never felt any rough treatment. He has even adjusted one of my daughters. With a specialty of working with children you obviously know how to be gentle.
I have highly recommended Dr. Wagner to several people and will continue to do so!

Ahhhh…. I’m in love with a married man!! I went for my first ever visit yesterday evening. We did the whole consultation/evaluation thing and an adjustment. I have never been to a chiropractor before… i just woke up last week with unbearable neck/back pain and couldn’t move like i should have been able to. So i searched around and found Dr. Wagner on here and thought I’d give it a shot. I think I’m hooked.

Yelp
Was having really bad lower back pain called to hopefully get in with him the same day. Was surprised when I called and Dr. Wagner picked up. I first asked if he accepted my insurance and then described my problem area. He instructed me to come in when he opened later that day to see him. I got there and was greeted by Dr. Wagner. After I finished my paperwork I went into his consult room where we went over my problem area and he described to me what he does and how chiropractors can eliminate pain. I was adjusted and it felt amazing. I’m going for a follow up appointment in a couple days. dr. Wagner was patient and funny. Will definitely be back 🙂
